COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies (Major Research Paper option) at Trent University is a graduate program designed to provide advanced interdisciplinary training in the study of Canada, Indigenous–settler relations, and related cultural, political, and social issues. The program requires the completion of 3.0 graduate-level CSID credits, which must include CSID 5000Y Core Colloquium along with additional approved 5000-level CSID elective courses, unless otherwise authorized. These courses develop students’ theoretical understanding, critical thinking abilities, and methodological skills needed for advanced research in Canadian and Indigenous Studies. A central requirement of the program is the Major Research Paper, which allows students to conduct independent, original research on a topic of their choice within the field. The paper is examined by a faculty supervisor and an additional reviewer from a different academic unit or program within the Frost Centre, ensuring interdisciplinary academic evaluation. This structure encourages rigorous scholarly inquiry while fostering diverse academic perspectives. The program emphasizes careful academic writing, research engagement, and intellectual development through coursework and supervised research. It is designed to prepare graduates for further academic study, professional roles in policy, cultural organizations, or research-based careers.
