COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Economics (Honours) at Trent University is a 20.0-credit program that integrates advanced mathematics with economic theory to analyze how markets, resources, and financial systems operate. The program is designed for students with strong analytical and quantitative skills who are interested in understanding complex economic behaviour through mathematical modelling. Students complete 13.0 required credits in Economics and Mathematics, beginning with foundational courses such as ECON 1010H and 1020H, and progressing to intermediate and advanced study including ECON 2000H, 2010H, 3000H, 3010H, 3200H, 3250H, 4000H, 4041H, and 4050H. Mathematical training includes courses such as MATH 1110H or 1111H, MATH 1120H or 1121H, and advanced coursework in MATH 1350H, 1550H, 2110H, 2560H, 2570H, and 4510H. The program also includes a specialized MATH-ECON course (MATH-ECON 4251H) that bridges both disciplines, along with additional upper-level economics electives. Students develop strong skills in data analysis, optimization, and economic modelling, preparing them to evaluate issues such as market behaviour, resource allocation, and financial decision-making. The curriculum is highly structured and rigorous, with exemptions available for certain prerequisites based on prior mathematics coursework. In addition to program requirements, students must complete university-wide degree requirements, including 0.5 credit from an Approved Indigenous Course List and 14.0 science credits. Graduates are well prepared for careers in finance, policy analysis, data science, economics research, and graduate studies.
