COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Indigenous Environmental Science (Honours) at Trent University is a 20.0-credit interdisciplinary program that integrates Indigenous Knowledge systems with Western scientific approaches to understanding environmental change and sustainability. The program is designed to prepare students to address complex environmental challenges affecting Indigenous communities and the wider world through both scientific analysis and culturally grounded perspectives. Students complete 10.5 required Indigenous Environmental Science (IESS) credits, which include foundational and advanced courses such as IESS 1001H, 2601Y, 3631H, 3632H, 3731H, 3732H, 4730Y, and the capstone-level IESS 4740Y. These courses build progressive expertise in environmental systems, land-based learning, and Indigenous approaches to ecological stewardship. The program also includes 1.0 credit in Earth and Environmental Science (ERSC 1010H and 1020H) along with an additional ERSC elective from courses such as ERSC 2080H, 2220H, 2230H, 2240H, or 2260H. Students further develop their understanding of Indigenous perspectives through 1.0 credit in Indigenous Studies (INDG 1001H and 1002H). In addition, 2.0 ERSC credits and 1.0 upper-level ERSC credit provide deeper scientific training at the 3000 level or higher. Recommended courses include IESS 3635H, 3636H, 4630H, INDG 4050H, and Indigenous language studies. Students must also complete university-wide requirements, including 14.0 science credits and 1.0 MATH credit, ensuring strong scientific and analytical preparation for careers in environmental science, policy, and Indigenous-led research.
