COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Indigenous Environmental Science at Trent University is a 15.0-credit interdisciplinary program designed to combine Indigenous Knowledge systems with Western scientific approaches to understanding and addressing environmental challenges. The program prepares students to engage with environmental issues affecting Indigenous communities and the broader world through a strong foundation in both science and Indigenous studies. Students complete 7.5 required Indigenous Environmental Science (IESS) credits, including courses such as IESS 1001H, 2601Y, 3631H, 3632H, 3731H, 3732H, and the capstone-level IESS 4740Y, which help develop advanced knowledge in environmental systems and Indigenous approaches to sustainability. The program also includes foundational science coursework, with 1.0 credit in Earth and Environmental Science (ERSC 1010H and 1020H) and an additional ERSC elective from courses such as ERSC 2220H, 2230H, 2240H, 2260H, or 2080H. Students further strengthen their interdisciplinary understanding through 1.0 credit in Indigenous Studies (INDG 1001H and 1002H). The program encourages additional learning in advanced Indigenous and environmental topics, including recommended courses such as IESS 3635H, 3636H, 4630H, INDG 4050H, and Indigenous language studies. In addition to program requirements, students must complete university-wide degree requirements, including 11.0 science credits and 1.0 MATH credit, ensuring strong scientific literacy alongside Indigenous perspectives for careers in environmental science, sustainability, and community-focused research.
