COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy (Honours) at Trent University is a 20.0-credit program designed to develop advanced skills in critical thinking, logical analysis, and philosophical reasoning. Students are strongly encouraged to begin their studies with introductory courses such as PHIL 1000H, 1100H, or 1200H before progressing to upper-level philosophy. They are also advised to take PHIL-AGRS 2420H and/or 2430H in their second year, as these courses provide important preparation for advanced studies such as PHIL 3420H and 3430H. For students considering graduate studies, PHIL-COIS 2410H is strongly recommended due to its focus on formal logic and analytical skills. The program structure requires a total of 9.0 Philosophy credits, including 1.5 credits at the 4000 level and 3.5 credits at the 3000 level or higher, along with additional upper-level coursework. Students must also include at least 0.5 credit from PHIL 1200H or PHIL 2410H, and 2.0 credits from a selected group of advanced philosophy courses such as PHIL 2420H, 2430H, 3420H, 3430H, 4530H, or 4540H. The program emphasizes rigorous philosophical inquiry, structured argumentation, and the careful evaluation of ideas across areas such as ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, and logic. Students may also pursue a joint-major Honours BSc in Philosophy and a science discipline, provided they complete required science credits and select approved courses that count toward science requirements. In addition to program requirements, students must complete university-wide degree requirements, including 0.5 credit from an Approved Indigenous Course List.
