COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in International Political Economy (Honours) at Trent University is a 20.0-credit joint-major program that explores the relationship between politics and economics in a global context. It focuses on how governments, markets, international institutions, and societies interact to shape trade, development, inequality, and global governance. The program is designed to build strong analytical, critical thinking, and research skills by combining courses from economics and political studies with interdisciplinary global development perspectives. Students complete 7.0 core credits within the major. These include foundational courses in economics (ECON 1010H and 1020H) and politics (POST 1001H and 1002H), which provide essential grounding in economic theory and political systems. Students also take additional courses from related disciplines such as Global Development Studies or Political Studies, including options like GDST 2001H, GDST 3001H, POST 2231H, or POST 2232H. The program requires students to select courses from three categories (A, B, and C), ensuring both breadth and specialization in international political and economic issues. At least one credit must be at the 3000 level and one at the 4000 level, allowing for advanced study and research. Students may also include approved study abroad courses with permission, enhancing global learning experiences. Graduates are prepared for careers in government, international organizations, policy analysis, business, and further academic study.
