COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies (Honours) at Trent University is a 20.0-credit program that provides an advanced and in-depth exploration of Indigenous histories, cultures, knowledge systems, and contemporary issues. The program is designed to help students critically engage with Indigenous perspectives while also understanding broader social, political, and cultural contexts affecting Indigenous communities in Canada and around the world. Students complete 9.0 required Indigenous Studies (INDG) credits, beginning with foundational and intermediate courses such as INDG 1001H, 1002H, 2100Y, and 3813Y, which build essential knowledge of Indigenous worldviews, histories, and methodologies. The program then progresses to advanced and specialized study through INDG 4201H and 4202H, along with additional 4000-level coursework that allows students to engage in high-level academic inquiry and research. Students also complete further INDG credits beyond the core requirements, enabling deeper specialization in areas such as governance, land-based knowledge, culture, language, and decolonial studies. A key feature of the program is its requirement to include at least 0.5 credit from each of four thematic categories, ensuring a broad and balanced academic foundation across different areas of Indigenous Studies. In addition to program requirements, students must fulfill university-wide degree requirements. Graduates are well prepared for careers in education, policy, research, advocacy, and community leadership, as well as for graduate studies in related fields.
