COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts Honours program in French Studies at Trent University is a comprehensive 20.0-credit degree designed to develop advanced proficiency in the French language alongside deep cultural and literary understanding of the Francophone world. The program includes 10.0 credits in French, beginning with core courses such as FREN 1101H, 1102H, 2051H, and 2452H, which build strong foundational skills in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. Students then progress through a variety of intermediate and advanced courses focusing on grammar, composition, translation, literature, and cultural studies, including topics related to Québec and broader Francophone societies. The program requires multiple upper-level courses at the 3000 level or beyond, ensuring students develop strong analytical, research, and communication skills in French. A minimum of 2.0 credits must be completed at the 4000 level, allowing students to engage in advanced, specialized study. Students also have some flexibility to include approved courses from related disciplines, provided work is completed in French. Certain introductory or non-major courses are excluded to maintain academic rigor. In addition to major requirements, students must meet overall university degree requirements, including an Indigenous course credit. Graduates are well prepared for careers in education, translation, international relations, communications, and cultural sectors, as well as for further academic study in French or related fields.
