COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts Honours program in French & Canadian Studies at Trent University is a 20.0-credit degree designed to build strong bilingual and interdisciplinary knowledge of Canadian society, culture, and language. The program includes 10.0 credits in French and Canadian Studies (CAST and FREN courses) along with university-wide degree requirements. Students begin with foundational Canadian Studies coursework, such as CAST 1100H and other introductory CAST options, before progressing into more advanced topics that explore Canadian identity, history, culture, and society from multiple perspectives. The French language component develops progressively through courses like FREN 1102H and FREN 2452H, followed by intermediate and advanced French courses that strengthen reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills. Higher-level French courses allow students to engage deeply with literature, linguistics, and Francophone culture. The program also requires upper-level courses in both CAST and FREN, including 3000- and 4000-level classes, ensuring students gain advanced analytical and research abilities. Through this structure, students develop strong bilingual communication skills alongside critical thinking and cultural analysis. The program prepares graduates for careers in education, government, public service, translation, communications, cultural organizations, and international or bilingual professional roles, as well as for further academic study in Canadian Studies, French, or related humanities disciplines.
