COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Communications at Trent University is an in-depth program that develops students’ abilities in communication theory, media analysis, and professional writing. The Honours stream is designed to provide both foundational knowledge and advanced specialization through a structured combination of core Communications (COMM) courses, upper-level electives, and interdisciplinary learning opportunities. Students begin with introductory courses that build essential skills in understanding media, communication processes, and critical analysis. As they progress, they move into higher-level courses that focus on advanced communication strategies, research methods, and applied media practices, including a fourth-year capstone-style course that integrates learning across the program. A required writing sequence ensures students develop strong academic and professional writing skills, which are essential across communication-related careers. The program also allows significant flexibility by including electives from business, marketing, cultural studies, Indigenous studies, anthropology, and sociology, enabling students to tailor their degree to specific interests and career goals. In some joint-major pathways, courses from sociology or policing may be considered equivalent for specific requirements, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the field.
