COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies (General) at Trent University is a 15.0-credit program designed to develop students’ understanding of political systems, governance, and public decision-making at local, national, and global levels. The program provides a strong foundation in political theory, Canadian politics, and international relations, while also allowing students to build analytical and communication skills through structured coursework. Students complete 6.0 credits in Political Studies (POST), beginning with foundational courses such as POST 1001H and 1002H, and continuing to more advanced study including POST 3600H. They also select 2.0 credits from a range of intermediate-level courses such as POST 2011H, 2012H, 2231H, 2232H, 2351H, or 2352H, which explore key political concepts and issues in greater depth. The program further requires 1.5 credits at the 3000 level or higher to ensure advanced engagement with political analysis, as well as an additional 1.0 POST credit to broaden academic exposure within the discipline. Through this structure, students develop critical thinking skills and the ability to evaluate political systems, policies, and institutions. In addition to program requirements, students must complete university-wide degree requirements, including 0.5 credit from an Approved Indigenous Course List. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in public service, law, policy, journalism, and related fields.
