COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy (General) at Trent University is a 15.0-credit program designed to develop strong critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and argumentative writing skills through the systematic study of fundamental philosophical questions. Students are encouraged to begin their studies with introductory courses such as PHIL 1000H, 1100H, or 1200H, which provide foundational knowledge in philosophical inquiry. As they progress, students are advised to explore interdisciplinary options and specialized courses, including PHIL-AGRS 2420H and 2430H, particularly before advancing to higher-level studies such as PHIL 3420H or 3430H. PHIL-COIS 2410H is also strongly recommended for students interested in further academic study, especially those considering graduate work in philosophy, as it strengthens logical and computational reasoning skills. The program includes a total of 6.0 required Philosophy credits, with at least 2.0 credits at the 3000 level or higher, and an additional 4.0 credits in Philosophy courses. Within these requirements, students must complete at least 2.0 credits from selected advanced courses such as PHIL 2420H, 2430H, 3420H, 3430H, 4530H, or 4540H. The program emphasizes rigorous analysis, logical reasoning, and clear expression of ideas. In addition to departmental requirements, students must meet university-wide degree requirements, including 0.5 credit from an Approved Indigenous Course List. Overall, the program prepares students for careers and further study in law, education, public policy, writing, and other fields requiring strong analytical and communication skills.
