COURSE CURRICULUM

The Media Studies program with an Option in Creative Writing at Trent University Durham GTA, delivered in partnership with Durham College, is a four-year integrated degree-diploma program designed to combine academic learning with practical media training. In Year 1 at Trent, students build foundational skills in media, English, Indigenous studies, and writing through courses such as MDST 1010H, ENGL 1851H, INDG 1001H, and WRIT 1001H, along with an elective. In Years 2 and 3 at Durham College, students focus heavily on hands-on journalism and media production training, studying areas such as reporting, interviewing, media law and ethics, broadcast production, photo and video production, podcasting, and multimedia storytelling. These years also include specialized courses in inclusive and Indigenous-focused storytelling, helping students develop ethical and socially aware media practices. Alongside college training, students continue completing MDST and ENGL credits through Trent, including advanced coursework like MDST 3535H and ENGL 3851H or 3855H. In Year 4, students return to Trent to complete advanced English and media studies courses, including ENGL 4850Y, as well as upper-level electives. They also complete field placement preparation and a professional internship experience that provides real-world industry exposure. Overall, the program equips graduates with strong writing, storytelling, technical production skills, and professional experience for careers in journalism, broadcasting, digital media, and communications.
