COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies (General) at Trent University is a 15.0-credit program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in Indigenous histories, cultures, perspectives, and contemporary issues. The program encourages critical engagement with Indigenous Traditional Knowledge alongside academic approaches, helping students understand the diverse experiences of Indigenous peoples and their relationships with broader Canadian and global societies. Students complete 6.0 required Indigenous Studies (INDG) credits, beginning with foundational courses such as INDG 1001H and 1002H, followed by more advanced study including INDG 2100Y and 3813Y. In addition to these core courses, students take 2.0 credits at the 3000 level or higher, allowing them to deepen their understanding of specialized topics such as governance, culture, land-based knowledge, and social justice. An additional 1.0 INDG credit further supports breadth within the discipline. The program also requires students to select courses that cover at least three of four thematic categories, ensuring a well-rounded and multidisciplinary academic experience. This structure allows students to explore Indigenous issues from multiple perspectives while developing strong analytical, research, and communication skills. In addition to program requirements, students must fulfill university-wide degree requirements. Graduates are well prepared for careers in education, public service, community development, policy, advocacy, and further academic study in Indigenous-related fields.
