COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in French Studies (General) at Trent University is a 15.0-credit program that develops students’ proficiency in the French language while deepening their understanding of Francophone cultures and literature. The major requires 6.0 credits in French (FREN), beginning with core language courses such as FREN 1101H, 1102H, 2051H, and 2452H, which build foundational skills in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. Students then progress to intermediate and advanced courses, selecting from a range of options that focus on grammar, composition, translation, and cultural analysis. The program includes courses on Québec literature and culture, as well as broader Francophone topics, allowing students to explore diverse perspectives within the French-speaking world. Upper-level requirements ensure that students complete courses at the 3000 level or beyond, strengthening their analytical, linguistic, and research abilities. Some introductory or specialized courses are excluded from counting toward the major, ensuring that students focus on appropriate academic progression. The program emphasizes both language mastery and cultural literacy, helping students develop strong communication and critical thinking skills. In addition to major requirements, students must fulfill overall university degree requirements, including an Indigenous course credit. Graduates are prepared for careers in education, translation, communications, international relations, and cultural fields, as well as for further studies in French language, literature, or related disciplines.
