COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Studies is a flexible interdisciplinary program designed to explore culture through visual arts, media, literature, theory, and creative practice. The program requires students to complete 15.0 credits in the single-major General stream or a structured set of credits in the joint-major option, including foundational CUST courses at the 1000 level and advanced coursework at the 2000 level or higher. Students build their degree by engaging with four major areas of study: Integrated Arts, Literature & Narrative, Film & Media, and Culture & Theory. These areas allow learners to study both the production and interpretation of cultural forms such as film, theatre, television, literature, and digital media, while also examining the social and political contexts that shape them. In addition to academic analysis, the program emphasizes hands-on creative learning through workshops in photography, music, podcasting, game design, and other media practices, helping students develop practical artistic and technical skills. Cultural Studies also allows some flexibility through approved courses from related disciplines such as English literature, broadening opportunities for specialization. Students are required to meet university-wide graduation requirements, including Indigenous studies credits. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in media, arts, communication, creative industries, education, and cultural research, as well as for further academic study in related fields.
