COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Communications at Trent University is designed to build strong skills in writing, media analysis, and effective communication across diverse contexts. The program emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical application, preparing students to think critically about how information is created, shared, and interpreted in modern society. In the single-major General stream, students complete a 15.0-credit degree that includes core Communications (COMM) courses alongside complementary studies in writing and related disciplines. Foundational courses introduce key concepts in communication theory, media studies, and rhetorical analysis, while upper-level courses allow students to deepen their understanding and specialize in areas of interest. A required writing component strengthens students’ ability to produce clear, persuasive, and professional-level written work, an essential skill for many careers. The program also encourages flexibility by allowing students to take related electives from business, media, cultural studies, and Indigenous studies, helping them develop a broader interdisciplinary perspective. In joint-major pathways, certain sociology and policing courses may be considered equivalent for specific requirements, reflecting the program’s interdisciplinary nature.
