COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts Program in Canadian Studies at Trent University is designed to provide students with a structured and interdisciplinary understanding of Canada through its history, culture, politics, and social development. The single-major General program requires a total of 15.0 credits, including 6.0 credits specifically in Canadian Studies (CAST). Students begin with 1.0 CAST credit that includes CAST 1100H and one additional introductory course chosen from options such as CAST 1101H, 1103H, 1104H, or 1105H, which provide foundational knowledge of Canadian society and key themes in the discipline. The program then requires 3.0 CAST credits at the 3000 level or higher, allowing students to explore more advanced and specialized topics in Canadian Studies. An additional 2.0 CAST credits must be completed beyond these requirements, ensuring depth and breadth in the subject. Students must also complete at least 1.0 credit from each of Categories A, B, C, and D, ensuring exposure to diverse thematic areas within the field. Certain courses, such as CAST 4000Y/4001H, community-based research, and reading courses, can be used to fulfill remaining degree requirements but are not assigned to category columns. Overall, the program builds strong analytical and research skills while developing a deep understanding of Canadian identity, culture, and society, preparing graduates for careers in public service, education, policy, media, and community organizations.
