COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Social Work (MSW) program at Toronto Metropolitan University is a full-time, practice-focused graduate program centered on anti-oppression frameworks and critical engagement with social inequality. Designed for students with a background in social work, the curriculum integrates research, theory, and applied learning to prepare graduates for leadership in advanced social work practice. Students are required to complete four core courses that address marginalization, anti-oppression strategies, critical research methods, and practice-based inquiry. They must also complete a Major Research Paper (MRP) that fosters independent research and field advancement, and a field practicum that allows students to apply their learning in real-world contexts aligned with the program’s anti-oppression mission. In addition, students take two electives from a diverse range of topics including child welfare, mental health, Indigenous knowledge, anti-racism, health, gender, and international social work. Electives offer students the opportunity to specialize or deepen their expertise in areas aligned with their career goals or lived experience. The program aims to develop graduates with strong analytical and critical thinking skills, research capacity, and practical intervention tools for enacting social justice in varied settings such as healthcare, education, child welfare, and community services. Through its rigorous and socially engaged curriculum, the MSW program supports transformative practice rooted in equity and systemic change.
