COURSE CURRICULUM

The Public Health degree program at Toronto Metropolitan University is designed to equip students with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to address public health challenges and improve population well-being. In the first year, students build foundational skills through courses in chemistry, pathophysiology, environmental health law, professional practice, data management, communication, toxicology, and biostatistics. As students progress into the second year, they study topics such as food hygiene, occupational health and safety, communicable disease agents, epidemiology, housing and built environments, parasitology, and emergency preparedness. In the third year, the curriculum shifts focus to research methods, water and air quality, food safety, wastewater treatment, and pollution management. Students also begin to integrate critical thinking with practical application through upper-level liberal studies and open electives. The final year further emphasizes applied learning and decision-making, with coursework in infection control, risk assessment, health promotion, public health law, and food safety management. Throughout the program, students have opportunities to participate in site visits, seminars, and co-op placements, culminating in an advanced professional practice course. Graduates are well-prepared to become certified environmental health officers or public health inspectors and are equipped for careers that involve protecting and enhancing public health across diverse communities.
