ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), formerly Ryerson University, is a public research university located in downtown Toronto, Canada. Established in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology, the university was initially created to provide career-focused education and vocational training for returning World War II veterans. Over time, it evolved from a polytechnic institute into a full-fledged university, gaining degree-granting authority in the 1970s and expanding its academic and research offerings. It was renamed Ryerson Polytechnic University in 1993 and became Ryerson University in 2002.In 2022, following public pressure and institutional review of Egerton Ryerson’s connection to the Canadian Indian residential school system, the university was renamed Toronto Metropolitan University to better reflect its values of inclusion and reconciliation. TMU now hosts over 44,000 undergraduate and nearly 3,000 graduate students across seven faculties, including Engineering, Science, Law, Arts, Community Services, Management, and The Creative School. It offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs, supported by strong partnerships with industry and community organizations. TMU is deeply integrated into the city’s economic and cultural fabric, making it a leader in applied education, innovation, and social impact. The university continues to grow as a hub for research, equity, and urban engagement.
