COURSE CURRICULUM

The environment is a complex system made up of biological, geological, physical, chemical, social, and cultural factors that interact to influence the lives of individuals and communities. Today, our environment faces significant threats from global challenges such as overpopulation, climate change, and habitat fragmentation. Many of these issues are caused by human activity and, in turn, pose serious risks to human well-being. Addressing these problems requires more than just scientific knowledge; it demands an understanding of culture, sociology, economics, politics, and ethics to develop comprehensive and lasting solutions. Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is uniquely positioned to study these environmental issues due to its location in Kamloops, British Columbia, a city surrounded by diverse ecosystems. The region offers access to rare native grasslands, freshwater wetlands, lakes, rivers, and a variety of forested ecosystems, as well as mountain and ocean environments within a short drive. This proximity to varied ecosystems provides students with valuable hands-on learning opportunities. Additionally, TRU collaborates with several regional organizations and government agencies, including the BC Ministry of Forests and Range, Agriculture Canada Research Station, BC Ministry of Environment, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, BC Grassland Conservation Council, and Ducks Unlimited Canada, enhancing research and practical experience for students. The MSc in Environmental Sciences program at TRU addresses the need for skilled environmental professionals at local, regional, provincial, national, and international levels. It is designed to develop innovative graduates with multidisciplinary skills and broad knowledge in environmental science. The program’s flexible and unique structure ensures it remains relevant to the evolving challenges of environmental protection and sustainability, preparing students to make meaningful contributions to the field.
