COURSE CURRICULUM

The Water and Wastewater Technology Diploma at Thompson Rivers University is a two-year, career-focused program designed to prepare students for work as operators in municipal and industrial water and wastewater systems. The curriculum blends science, engineering fundamentals, and hands-on technical training to ensure students can safely operate and maintain essential water infrastructure. In the first year, students study foundational courses including water sources, water treatment processes, and wastewater systems, where they learn about water quality, sampling, and treatment methods. They also take applied mathematics and science courses covering chemistry, hydraulics, and basic engineering principles. Additional courses include mechanical systems for understanding pumps, valves, and piping networks, applied electrical systems for equipment operation, and introduction to utility operations for wastewater collection and treatment processes. In the second year, students advance to more complex topics such as advanced water and wastewater treatment technologies, system optimization, environmental regulations, safety procedures, and utility management practices. Communication and professional development skills are also included to prepare students for workplace responsibilities. A significant portion of the program involves practical lab work and hands-on training in real or simulated treatment systems, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.
