COURSE CURRICULUM

The Veterinary Technology on-campus diploma at Thompson Rivers University is a two-year, four-semester full-time program designed to prepare students for a professional career as Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs). This intensive program requires a minimum commitment of around 30 hours per week, combining classroom instruction, laboratory work, and hands-on animal care duties. Students gain practical, real-world experience in essential areas such as diagnostic imaging, anesthesia, critical care, surgical assistance, and dentistry. A key strength of the program is its strong emphasis on experiential learning, where students work directly with animals in dedicated on-campus facilities. Training includes care for small animals in specialized TRU-managed labs, while large animal experience is gained at the university’s farm, providing exposure to livestock handling and treatment. In addition, students have opportunities to work with wildlife and birds through community partnerships, broadening their practical skills and understanding of diverse animal care environments. The program focuses on building clinical competence, technical expertise, and professional responsibility required in veterinary practice. Upon successful completion, graduates are well-prepared to write the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE), which is required for registration as an RVT in Canada. Overall, the program equips students with the hands-on skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to work effectively in veterinary clinics, hospitals, and animal care facilities.
