COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport Event Management Diploma at Thompson Rivers University is a two-year, 60-credit program designed to prepare students for careers in the sports, recreation, and event industries. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in communication, tourism, business, and event fundamentals through courses such as Professional and Academic Composition, The World of Events, Introduction to Tourism, Organizational Leadership in Tourism, Financial Accounting, Technical Communication, Tourism and Services Marketing, Catering and Service Management, and Introduction to the Study of Sport. A co-operative education work term provides valuable hands-on industry experience. In the second year, students focus on specialized sport and event management training. Key courses include Sports Event Management, Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity, Financial Operations Control in Tourism, Tourism and Hospitality Law, Staging Special Events, Fundraising for Non-Profit Organizations, Sports Event Marketing, and Human Resources Management. Students also choose between Field Experience, Sport in Canadian Society, or Entrepreneurship in Tourism to enhance practical learning. This combination of classroom instruction and experiential learning helps students develop strong organizational, leadership, marketing, and operational skills. Graduates are prepared for careers in sports event planning, team management, sports marketing, facility operations, fundraising, and entrepreneurship within the global sports and recreation industry.
