COURSE CURRICULUM

The Human Service Diploma at Thompson Rivers University is a structured program designed to prepare students for careers in social services, community support, and human welfare sectors. The curriculum is delivered over four semesters and combines classroom learning with extensive field practicum experiences. In the first year, students take foundational courses such as Introduction to Interpersonal Communications and Helping Relationships, Introduction to Human Service Professional Practice, Introduction to the Family in Human Service Practice, Introduction to Indigenous Practice, and Introduction to Mental Health and Substance Use. These are complemented by courses in communication, critical thinking, and introductory social service skills, along with a supervised Year 1 practicum that provides hands-on community experience. In the second year, students progress to more advanced topics including Professional Communication and Helping Relationships, Theoretical Foundations in Human Service Practice, Introduction to Social Work Practice, Social Welfare in Canada, Law in Human Service Practice, Child and Youth Trauma, and advanced communication skills for facilitating change. A second major practicum allows students to apply learned concepts in real agencies while working with diverse populations. Electives and supporting courses in psychology, sociology, and literature further enhance understanding of human behaviour and social systems. Overall, the curriculum integrates theory, ethics, Indigenous perspectives, and real-world practice to prepare graduates for entry-level roles in human services and community support work.
