COURSE CURRICULUM

The Event Management program at Thompson Rivers University is a two-year structured diploma that combines academic learning with practical industry experience, totaling 60 credits. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in communication, tourism, business, and event fundamentals through courses such as Professional and Academic Composition, The World of Events, Introduction to Tourism, Organizational Leadership in Tourism, Financial Accounting, Technical Communication, Human Resources Management, Tourism and Services Marketing, and Catering and Service Management. These courses are designed to develop essential skills in writing, leadership, finance, and hospitality operations. A co-operative education work term in the summer provides real-world industry experience. In the second year, the focus shifts to advanced event-specific and management skills. Students study Conference Management, Managing Festivals and Events, Financial Operations Control in Tourism, Tourism and Hospitality Law, Staging Special Events, Fundraising for Non-Profit Organizations, Hotel Sales and Convention Services, Entrepreneurship in Tourism, and a Field Experience course that provides hands-on training. This combination of classroom learning and practical field exposure prepares students for careers in festival production, corporate event planning, hospitality management, tourism operations, and entrepreneurship. Overall, the program develops strong organizational, leadership, and event execution skills required to succeed in the dynamic global event and tourism industry.
