COURSE CURRICULUM

The Architectural and Engineering Technology (ARET) program at Thompson Rivers University provides students with a comprehensive foundation in architectural, civil, and mechanical design principles along with practical training in modern construction technologies. The curriculum covers key technical subjects such as architectural design, statics and strength of materials, structural analysis, fluid mechanics, mechanical design, electrical design, and the design of steel, wood, and reinforced concrete structures. Students also study construction management, construction contracts, specifications, estimating, building regulations, technical writing, and construction surveying, which help them understand the full lifecycle of construction and infrastructure projects. A strong emphasis is placed on applied learning through hands-on projects and computer-aided design (CAD) training. Students gain experience using networked CAD workstations equipped with the latest Autodesk software, including AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Revit Architecture. They also learn to customize CAD software and develop advanced drafting and design skills essential for industry practice. The program prepares students to create accurate technical drawings, interpret engineering plans, and collaborate effectively on multidisciplinary design projects. Overall, the ARET program equips graduates with the technical knowledge, design expertise, and software proficiency required for careers in architectural drafting, civil engineering support, construction planning, and related fields within the built environment industry.
