COURSE CURRICULUM

The Power Engineering program at TRU is designed to provide students with a strong combination of theoretical knowledge and extensive hands-on training in industrial power plant operations. A major component of the program is boiler plant operation, where students gain eight weeks of practical experience working directly on TRU’s advanced training facility. This includes operating boilers, monitoring systems, and understanding real-world power generation processes. Students also receive two weeks of basic electrical training, which helps them understand electrical systems commonly used in power plants and industrial facilities. In addition, one week of basic welding instruction is provided to build essential fabrication and repair skills. The program further includes hands-on exposure to pipefitting, millwrighting, and instrumentation, giving students a broad understanding of mechanical systems and equipment maintenance. A key feature of the program is access to TRU’s comprehensive steam power training plant, which includes two high-capacity boilers capable of producing over 10,000 pounds of 150 psi steam per hour and powering a 50 kW steam turbine that can generate electricity sufficient for approximately 30 homes. Students also gain experience working with both watertube and firetube gas-fired boilers. Overall, the program offers immersive, real-world training that prepares graduates for careers in power plant operations and industrial energy systems.
