COURSE CURRICULUM

The Education Assistant and Community Support Certificate is structured across two semesters, combining academic learning with practical training to prepare students for roles in educational and community support settings. In the Fall Semester, students begin with ENGL 1100 Composition to strengthen written communication skills, followed by EDCS 1540 Interpersonal Communication and Relationships, which focuses on building effective professional interactions. EDCS 1580 introduces professional human service practice, while EDCS 1640 provides a foundation in community and school support work. Additionally, CYCA 2400 Human Development: Conception to Late Childhood helps students understand developmental stages in early life. In the Winter Semester, learners progress to EDCS 1590, which covers practical foundations of education and community support, and EDCS 1650, focusing on understanding behaviour and promoting independence. A key component is EDCS 1680 Field Work, where students gain hands-on experience in real-world settings. HUMS 1770 introduces human service practice with Indigenous communities, emphasizing cultural awareness and inclusive support, while CYCA 2410 explores human development from adolescence to end of life. Overall, the program blends theory, communication, developmental psychology, and field experience to equip students with the skills needed to effectively support individuals with diverse needs.
