COURSE CURRICULUM

The Automotive Service Technician Foundation program at Thompson Rivers University is a 27-week, hands-on training program designed to prepare students for entry into the automotive trade. The curriculum focuses on developing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to diagnose, service, and repair cars and light trucks. Students begin with general automotive fundamentals, including shop safety, proper use of tools and equipment, and applied mathematics relevant to technical measurements and problem-solving. The program then progresses into specialized mechanical systems, starting with engines, where learners study components, operation, inspection, and repair procedures. Electrical and electronic systems are also covered in detail, including vehicle wiring, batteries, starting and charging systems, and basic diagnostic techniques. Students gain experience working on chassis-related systems such as suspension, steering, wheels, and tires, along with braking systems including hydraulic brakes and anti-lock braking systems. Drivetrain training includes clutches, manual and automatic transmissions, and drive axles, enabling students to understand power transfer within vehicles. Diagnostic training is integrated throughout the program, teaching students how to use testing equipment and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues effectively. Overall, the curriculum combines classroom instruction with extensive shop practice, preparing graduates for Level 1 apprenticeship and entry-level employment in the automotive service industry.
