COURSE CURRICULUM

The Indigenous Studies Certificate requires students to complete a minimum of 24 credits from courses designated as Indigenous content, providing a focused yet flexible pathway to explore Indigenous perspectives across disciplines. The program includes a wide selection of introductory courses such as Introduction to Archaeology, Cultural Anthropology, Canadian Native Peoples, Native Canadian Literature, and History of the Native Peoples of Canada, which build foundational knowledge about Indigenous histories, cultures, and social dynamics. Additional courses like Race and Ethnic Relations, Government and Politics of Canada, and Cultural Heritage and Nature Interpretation allow students to examine broader societal contexts and relationships affecting Indigenous communities. Learners can also study regional topics such as the cultures of British Columbia and the Yukon, gaining insight into specific geographic and cultural settings. While most courses are accessible within the certificate, some advanced upper-level options, including archaeology field training, Indigenous literature studies, and First Nations resource management, may require special permission due to prerequisites or degree program restrictions. In certain cases, non-traditional students may still gain access to these advanced courses.
