COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Physics Major at TRU is a four-year program that combines theoretical physics with strong laboratory and applied science training. In the first year, students typically take foundational courses such as Fundamentals of Physics I and II (PHYS 1100, PHYS 1200), Mechanics and Waves (PHYS 1150), along with Calculus I and II, Linear Algebra, Chemistry, and introductory computing or electives. These courses build the mathematical and scientific base needed for advanced study. In the second year, students move into core physics topics including Relativity and Quanta (PHYS 2000), Mechanics (PHYS 2200), Circuit Analysis (PHYS 2150), and Electromagnetism, alongside higher-level mathematics such as differential equations and multivariable calculus. The third and fourth years focus on specialized and advanced physics areas such as Classical and Statistical Thermodynamics (PHYS 3160), Advanced Mechanics (PHYS 3200), Quantum Mechanics (PHYS 3400), Biophysics, Optics, Solid State Physics, and Selected Topics in Physics (PHYS 3500). Students also complete advanced laboratory courses, computational physics, and may participate in directed research projects. Mathematics remains an important component throughout, including complex variables and advanced problem-solving courses. The program emphasizes both conceptual understanding and experimental skills, with extensive lab work in electronics, optics, and data analysis. Overall, the curriculum prepares graduates for careers in research, technology, engineering-related fields, teaching, or graduate studies in physics and applied sciences.
