COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Chemistry at TRU is a four-year degree that focuses on understanding chemical processes in natural and human-influenced environments. The curriculum is structured to move from foundational science in the early years to advanced environmental chemistry applications in upper levels. In the first year, students complete core courses such as Principles of Biology (BIOL 1110, BIOL 1210), Chemical Bonding and Organic Chemistry (CHEM 1500), English composition, and supporting science or math courses. In the second year, students study intermediate chemistry including analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry foundations, along with mathematics, physics, and introductory environmental or biology electives. The third year introduces specialized environmental chemistry courses such as Aqueous Environmental Chemistry (CHEM 3010), Atmospheric Environmental Chemistry (CHEM 3020), Physical Chemistry I and II (CHEM 3060, 3070), and Introduction to Biochemistry (CHEM 3070/BIOL 3130 equivalent). Students also take advanced labs and electives in environmental science and related disciplines. In the fourth year, coursework becomes highly specialized with Selected Topics in Environmental Chemistry (CHEM 4070), Directed Studies, and advanced laboratory/research-based learning. The program emphasizes hands-on laboratory training, data analysis, and research methods throughout all years. Students gain skills to evaluate pollution, chemical contaminants, atmospheric reactions, and water quality issues. Graduates are prepared for careers in environmental monitoring, pollution control, government agencies, research laboratories, and further graduate study in chemistry or environmental science.
