COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Biology at TRU is a four-year degree that provides students with a strong and flexible foundation in all major areas of biological science while allowing them to tailor their studies to personal interests. In the early years, students complete core courses such as BIOL 1110 and BIOL 1210 (Principles of Biology I and II), along with chemistry, mathematics or statistics, English composition, and introductory science courses. These are supported by subjects like general biology, scientific writing, and basic environmental science concepts. As students progress into second year, the curriculum expands into topics such as microbiology, ecology, genetics, biometrics, cell biology, and geographic information systems, along with supporting courses in chemistry and environmental science. In the third and fourth years, students choose from a wide range of advanced biology courses including evolution, physiology, ecology, population biology, environmental microbiology, conservation biology, and specialized electives in areas of interest. A significant feature of the program is its emphasis on laboratory work and field studies, where students gain hands-on experience collecting data, conducting experiments, and studying organisms in natural environments. The program culminates in upper-level electives and, in some cases, research or capstone-style projects. Overall, it prepares graduates for careers in health sciences, environmental research, education, biotechnology, and further academic study.
