COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Environmental Studies is structured with a combination of lower-level foundational courses and upper-level specialized study. At the lower level, applicable to all program options, students complete core courses that introduce key concepts in human geography, earth system science, climate and environmental change, geographic thought, and geographic analysis. These include courses such as GEOG 1010 or GEOG 1110, GEOG 1000, GEOG 2020 or GEOG 2050, GEOG 2400, GEOG 2700, GEOG 2740, and GEOG 2750. Students also choose from additional courses covering environmental studies, urban and regional planning, Canadian and regional geography, and economic landscapes, allowing flexibility in building a broad understanding of geographic systems. At the upper level, students select one of three program pathways: Geography and Environmental Studies Major, Physical Geography Major, or Honours Major. For the standard major, students must complete 30 credits at the 3000 or 4000 level in geography. At least three credits must be at the 4000 level, and students must take courses from four key areas: Environmental Studies, Human Geography, Physical Geography, and Geographical Methods. The remaining upper-level credits can be chosen from any category, including special topics or research-based courses, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific academic or career interests in geography and environmental studies.
