COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Laboratory Assistant program at Suncrest College is structured over two semesters, combining theoretical coursework with hands-on laboratory and clinical experiences to prepare students for careers in diverse healthcare settings. In the first semester, students build foundational knowledge in human anatomy and physiology (APHY 103), medical terminology (MTER 180), microbiology (MICR 111), and infection control and safety (INFC 180). They also gain practical skills through courses in basic electrocardiography (ECRD-101), general laboratory practice (PROC 180), introduction to basic lab procedures (PROC 183), and laboratory specimen procurement (PROC 185), alongside professional development in ethics and professionalism (ETHC 101) and understanding health and wellness psychology (PSYC 104). The second semester advances technical competencies with courses in histology and cytology (HSTC 188), specialized laboratory procedures (PROC 101), practical skills and simulation (SIMU 100), blood product management (TRFS 101), and clinical procedures (CLIN 112 and CLIN 120). Interprofessional education (IPE 100), cultural and Indigenous awareness (SOCI 101), and competency development (EDUC 100) prepare students for collaborative and culturally sensitive practice in healthcare teams. Through this combination of classroom, laboratory, and clinical training, students develop the technical expertise, hands-on experience, and professional skills required to collect, process, and manage specimens safely and accurately, ensuring readiness to work as competent medical laboratory assistants in hospitals, clinics, research labs, and other healthcare environments.
