COURSE CURRICULUM

The Heavy Duty and Truck & Transport Technician program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is designed to provide students with comprehensive training in mechanical systems, combining theory and hands-on practice to prepare them for careers in high-demand trades. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, beginning with brake systems, both air and hydraulic (BRAK 113–116), and progressing to drivetrain fundamentals and intermediate applications (DRTR 106–109). Electrical training includes basics and starting and charging systems (ELCT 102–105), while diesel engine theory and shop practice (ENGN 130–131) provide essential knowledge for vehicle operation and maintenance. Students also study environmental control systems (HVAC 101), hydraulics from basic to advanced levels (HYDR 110–113), and structural components including tracks, undercarriage, and steering systems (MAIN 104–107; STER 102–105). Trade mathematics (MATH 169), essential job skills (JOBS 125), and basic tools training (TOOL 154–155) support both technical competence and workplace readiness. Truck and trailer systems, including auxiliary power and HVAC systems (TRLR 100–103), are also integrated into the program. Welding skills, including oxy-fuel cutting, plasma arc cutting, and shielded metal arc welding (WLDR 158–159), complement mechanical training. Finally, a work experience component (WORK 149) allows students to apply their skills in a real-world industrial setting, ensuring graduates gain practical expertise, technical knowledge, and workplace readiness to excel in heavy duty equipment and truck and transport mechanic roles.
