COURSE CURRICULUM

Women’s Studies and Gender Studies at St. Thomas University requires students to complete 36 credit hours of coursework beyond the 1000 level, offering an interdisciplinary exploration of gender, identity, and social justice issues across multiple fields. Within these requirements, six credit hours are fulfilled by successfully completing WSGS 2016 Introduction to Women’s Studies and Gender Studies, which provides foundational knowledge of key theories, concepts, and approaches in the discipline. The remaining credit hours are selected from a wide range of cross-listed courses offered in different departments and designated as WSGS courses in the academic calendar. This structure allows students to study gender and sexuality from various disciplinary perspectives, including sociology, criminology, human rights, anthropology, psychology, and related fields. By integrating courses from multiple areas of study, the program encourages students to develop a broad and critical understanding of how gender intersects with other forms of identity and systems of power such as race, class, sexuality, and ability. The interdisciplinary nature of the major also helps students connect theoretical learning with real-world social issues and activism. Overall, the program equips students with strong analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in social justice, education, public policy, community work, and other fields focused on equality and human rights.
