COURSE CURRICULUM

Sustainability and Environmental Studies at St. Thomas University, students must complete 36 credit hours, combining core required courses with elective options that allow for specialization in areas of interest. The program includes 27 credit hours of required courses that build a strong foundation in environmental understanding, critical analysis, and applied sustainability practice. Students begin with SEST 1013 Understanding Environmental Problems and SEST 1023 Environmental Praxis: Making Change Happen, which introduce key environmental challenges and practical approaches to creating change. They continue with courses such as Perspectives on Environment and Society, Ecological Literacy, and either Power, Politics, and the Planet or Canadian Environmental Law. Additional core courses include Environmental Praxis: From Theory to Activism, Applied Research for Sustainability, Theories of Sustainability and Change, and a final Capstone Seminar that integrates learning across the program. In addition, students must complete 9 credit hours of electives chosen from 2000 and 3000–4000 level courses. These include topics such as food systems, climate crisis, energy and society, environmental hazards, sustainability communication, climate justice, regenerative food systems, and community sustainability. The program provides both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, preparing students for careers in environmental policy, advocacy, research, education, and sustainability-focused community development.
