COURSE CURRICULUM

Spanish and Latin American Studies at St. Thomas University are recommended to declare their major with the Registrar’s Office by the beginning of their second year. The program requires the completion of 36 credit hours in Spanish, providing students with a structured pathway to develop advanced language proficiency and cultural understanding of Spanish-speaking regions. Within these 36 credit hours, students must complete at least 12 credit hours at the third-year level, ensuring progression into more advanced language, literature, and cultural studies. In addition, at least 6 credit hours must be completed at the fourth-year level, allowing students to engage in higher-level analysis and specialized topics within the discipline. The remaining credit hours are selected from a range of Spanish and Latin American Studies courses, enabling students to build a well-rounded academic foundation. Students design their program of study in close consultation with a faculty advisor from the Spanish and Latin American Studies department, ensuring that their course selection aligns with academic goals and career aspirations. This structured yet flexible program supports the development of strong communication skills, cultural awareness, and critical thinking abilities. Overall, it prepares students for careers in education, translation, international relations, and other global professions requiring advanced Spanish language competence.
