COURSE CURRICULUM

The Double Major in French and Spanish at St. Thomas University allows students to develop advanced proficiency in two major Romance languages while gaining deep cultural and academic knowledge of both French- and Spanish-speaking worlds. To complete this program, students must fulfill the full requirements of both majors, totaling 72 credit hours—36 credits in French and 36 credits in Spanish—and maintain at least an overall B average across all coursework. In French, students study courses from both language development (Module 1: Langue française) and Francophone cultural studies (Module 2: Civilisation du monde francophone). Within this structure, at least 12 credit hours must come from upper-level 3000 courses such as FREN 3603 to FREN 3663, and at least 3 credit hours must be completed at the 4000 level for advanced specialization. In Spanish, students complete 36 credit hours, including at least 12 credit hours at the third-year level and 6 credit hours at the fourth-year level, with program planning done in consultation with a faculty advisor. This combination ensures strong linguistic proficiency, cultural awareness, and analytical skills in both languages. Overall, the double major prepares students for global careers in translation, international relations, diplomacy, education, and multicultural communication by providing advanced bilingual and intercultural competence.
