COURSE CURRICULUM

The Journalism major at St. Thomas University requires students to complete 36 credit hours in Journalism courses, with at least 18 credit hours at the 3000 or 4000 level. The program is structured progressively to build skills from foundational writing to advanced professional journalism practice. In the first year, students focus on core introductory courses such as Writing for Journalism and Introduction to Journalism, which develop essential writing skills and an understanding of journalism’s role in society. In the second year, students progress to courses like Reporting for Journalism, Ethics and Investigative Journalism, and Community Journalism, which emphasize storytelling, media law, ethics, and reporting techniques. In the third year, students engage in more specialized and advanced training through courses in Digital Journalism, Advanced Podcasting, and Advanced Writing for Journalism, along with electives in areas such as interviewing, commentary, business journalism, and feature storytelling. Cross-listed courses from English also expand their understanding of narrative and critical analysis. In the final year, students complete a Senior Seminar in Journalism that involves advanced research, writing, and production work, preparing them for professional standards in the field. Students may also complete an optional internship to gain real-world media experience. Overall, the program equips students for careers in journalism, broadcasting, digital media, and communications.
