COURSE CURRICULUM

An Interdisciplinary Major at St. Thomas University is a customized program of study that consists of 36 credit hours of coursework beyond the 1000 level, designed to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries while focusing on a clear theme or unifying academic principle. Students who wish to pursue this degree must first meet with the Coordinator of Interdisciplinary Studies to define their academic interests and learning goals. Based on this guidance, they develop a preliminary plan of study and approach a potential Program Director. Together with the Program Director, students refine their proposed program into a formal written proposal. This proposal must include the name of the Program Director, two additional faculty members who will serve on the advisory committee, and a detailed list of proposed courses with their codes and titles. Final approval of the program is granted by the Interdisciplinary Studies Committee, typically by the end of the second year, although proposals may be considered as late as the end of the third year in exceptional cases. Throughout the third and fourth years, the Coordinator and Program Director regularly monitor student progress. Written progress reports are submitted to the Dean and Registrar each year. The final degree is awarded based on the recommendation of the advisory committee.
