COURSE CURRICULUM

English at St. Thomas University, students must complete at least 36 credit hours in English, including a minimum of 18 credit hours at the 3000 level, ensuring both foundational knowledge and advanced study. The program begins with six credits at the first-year level, where students take either a comprehensive course covering English literatures in historical and cultural contexts or an introductory English course, along with one additional option such as theatre, film studies, or Indigenous Canadian literature. These courses establish essential skills in reading, interpretation, and critical thinking. Students are also required to complete a course in research methods, which develops academic writing, analysis, and scholarly research skills. The curriculum is designed to provide balanced exposure to different literary periods, requiring nine credit hours in pre-1800 literature and nine credit hours in post-1800 literature, allowing students to understand the evolution of literary traditions over time. In addition, students must complete six credit hours focused on Canadian or American literature, ensuring regional and cultural depth. This structured yet flexible program allows students to explore a wide range of texts, genres, and perspectives while building strong analytical and communication skills, preparing them for careers in writing, education, media, and further academic study.
