COURSE CURRICULUM
The Economics major at St. Thomas University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of economic systems, theories, and their real-world applications. Students typically declare the major at the beginning of their second year, which allows them to complete the required courses in an optimal sequence and build a strong foundation in economic analysis. While it is possible to declare the major later, doing so in the third year may limit course options due to scheduling and prerequisites. The program requires the successful completion of 36 credit hours in Economics. Foundational courses include ECON 1013, Introduction to Microeconomics, and ECON 1023, Introduction to Macroeconomics, which introduce students to basic economic principles and how they apply to individuals and societies. These are followed by ECON 2103, Microeconomic Theory I, and ECON 2113, Macroeconomic Theory I, which offer more advanced theoretical frameworks to analyze market behavior and national economies. In addition, ECON 2123, Quantitative Methods I, equips students with essential skills in data analysis and economic modeling.Students must also complete at least one upper-level course from a designated group, which includes options such as ECON 2153, 3133, 3143, 3163, or 3173, ensuring exposure to more specialized or advanced areas within the discipline. The remaining credit hours are filled through elective courses, and students are encouraged to choose at least one course from each of the following key subject areas: Political Economy, International Economy, and Canadian Institutions and Policy. This structure allows students to tailor their studies to their interests while gaining a balanced and critical understanding of how economic forces operate at local, national, and global levels. The major prepares graduates for careers in government, finance, policy research, and international development, or for further studies in economics, law, or public policy.
