COURSE CURRICULUM
The Disability, Aging, and Human Rights program at St. Thomas University includes a structured set of required courses and approved electives designed to build interdisciplinary knowledge in human rights, aging, health, and disability studies. Core courses begin with HMRT 1003 (Introduction to Human Rights), which explores foundational human rights concepts through case studies and global frameworks. Students also take GERO 1013 (Introduction to Gerontology), which examines aging from social, psychological, and physical perspectives, and GERO 1023 (Aging in Canada), focusing on Canadian systems like healthcare and pensions that affect older adults. Research skills are developed through HMRT 2013 (Research Methods) or GERO 3503 (Qualitative Research Methods), both of which train students in data collection, analysis, and research design. HMRT 2113 (Exploring Disability) provides a critical introduction to disability studies through a human rights lens, addressing ableism, ageism, accessibility, and social inclusion. In addition to core requirements, students complete 21 credit hours of electives from a wide range of disciplines including sociology, psychology, history, environmental studies, indigenous studies, health sciences, and gerontology. Courses such as Sociology of Aging, Disability in History, Mental Health and Aging, and Discrimination and the Law in Canada allow students to specialize their interests. Overall, the program integrates theory, research, and applied learning to prepare students for careers in advocacy, policy, healthcare, and social justice work focused on aging and disability issues.
