ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Saint Mary’s University (SMU), a public institution in Halifax, Nova Scotia, was founded in 1802 by the Roman Catholic Church, making it Canada’s second-oldest English-speaking and first Roman Catholic-initiated university. Originally established to educate Catholic youth and clergy, it gained degree-granting status in 1840. The university moved to its current 32-hectare South End Halifax campus in 1952 and became a secular institution in 1970. SMU is nationally recognized for excellence in business and chemistry programs and has expanded its academic offerings to include doctoral studies in astronomy and business. Key developments include the construction of the Burke–Gaffney Observatory and the Sobey Building. SMU’s education program was discontinued in 1996 due to provincial restructuring. Today, Saint Mary’s is known for its strong academic tradition, particularly in business, and for being the first Atlantic Canadian university to reach the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest world finals in 2001.
