COURSE CURRICULUM
The Autism and Behavioural Science program provides a comprehensive curriculum across two semesters, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to prepare students for supporting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In Semester 1, students begin with an introduction to Applied Behaviour Analysis (AUBS 1), learning the foundational principles of this evidence-based approach. They also study the characteristics and complexities of Autism Spectrum Disorders (AUBS 2), gaining a deeper understanding of how ASD impacts individuals across the lifespan. Ethics and Professionalism (AUBS 4) emphasizes the importance of ethical decision-making and responsible practice in diverse settings. In Working With Families & Teams (AUBS 5), students explore strategies for effective collaboration with families and multidisciplinary teams, which is essential for developing and implementing successful interventions. Field Placement 1 (AUBS 6) allows students to apply their learning in real-world environments under supervision, reinforcing classroom instruction with hands-on experience. The course in Specialized Instructional Strategies (AUBS 9) focuses on tailoring teaching methods to meet individual learning needs, while Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (BEHA 5) equips students with skills to handle challenging situations safely and respectfully. In Semester 2, students advance to Treating Challenging Behaviour (AUBS 3), which covers strategies to reduce and manage problematic behaviours. Behavioural Skill Building (AUBS 7) emphasizes techniques to teach new skills and promote independence. Parent and Staff Training (AUBS 8) highlights the importance of educating and empowering caregivers and professionals who support individuals with ASD. Transition Planning and Implementation (AUBS 10) prepares students to help individuals with ASD navigate life changes such as entering school, employment, or adult services. Field Placement 2 (AUBS 11) builds on the first placement by offering more in-depth, practical experience. Together, these courses prepare graduates to deliver meaningful, individualized support to individuals with ASD in clinical, educational, and community-based settings.
