COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biotechnology Advanced program at St. Lawrence College offers a comprehensive six-semester curriculum emphasizing hands-on, practical training across various scientific disciplines essential to the biotechnology field. In Semester 1, students gain foundational knowledge in cell biology, chemistry, mathematics, and essential lab techniques, while developing scientific computing skills. Semester 2 builds on this with applied organic chemistry, advanced biotechnology techniques, plant biology, instrumentation, and enhanced communication and mathematical problem-solving skills. Semester 3 introduces microbiology, environmental sustainability across biology and chemistry, laboratory operations, and biochemistry, offering students a multidisciplinary understanding of environmental impacts and laboratory procedures. Semester 4 deepens students’ expertise with molecular biology, food microbiology, advanced analytical methods for food and pharmaceuticals, biostatistics, bioethics, and animal handling regulations and practices. In Semester 5, students focus on applied genetics, tissue culture, fermentation, protein science, immunology, experimental maintenance, and professional preparation for work placement through resume building and site research. This prepares them for Semester 6, which consists of a 14-week work placement where students apply their accumulated skills in real-world biotechnology settings. This final semester is designed to provide immersive exposure to industry practices and specialized equipment, while fostering networking and professional development. Throughout the program, students are trained in current practices such as GLP, GMP, HACCP, and use of bioinformatics, ensuring they are workforce-ready for careers in biotechnology fields such as pharmaceuticals, environmental testing, food safety, and genetic research.
